Processing Properties

  • Heat Treatment:
    • Solution Treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1700°F (927°C) for 1 hour, then cool below 60°F for transformation to martensite. Air or liquid quenching is used based on section size.
    • Age Hardening: Performed at specified temperatures (e.g., H950, H1000) for 4 hours to achieve required strength and hardness.
  • Machining: Good machinability in solution-treated condition; optimal results in H1150M condition.
  • Welding: Suitable for inert-gas shielded or resistance welding. Preheat is not generally required. Welding can be followed by direct aging or solution treatment for best properties.
  • Hot Working: Heat uniformly to 2150°F, forging must be done above 1750°F. Cool in air and solution treat before aging.
