15-5 PH Stainless Steel

15-5 PH Stainless Steel is a martensitic, precipitation-hardening stainless steel with approximately 15% chromium and 5% nickel. Developed as a modification of 17-4 PH, this alloy offers high strength, hardness, and excellent corrosion resistance, along with improved ductility and transverse toughness. Known for its versatility, 15-5 PH is frequently used in aerospace, marine, and nuclear applications, thanks to its refined microstructure and excellent fabrication capabilities.

Processing Properties

  • Heat Treatment:
    • Solution Treatment (Condition A): Heat to 1038°C for 1 hour and air cool.
    • Age Hardening: Applied at varying temperatures (e.g., H900, H1025, H1075) to achieve different strength levels and hardness.
  • Machining: Similar to grade 304, machinable in annealed condition, with improved machinability after hardening.
  • Welding: Can be welded using standard methods. Post-weld aging recommended to match parent material properties.
  • Hot Working: Perform between 950°-1200°C, followed by solution treatment to restore properties.
