2507 Stainless Steel

2507 Stainless Steel (UNS S32750), commonly referred to as Super Duplex 2507, is a high-alloy duplex stainless steel known for exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and durability in harsh environments. With 25% chromium, 4% molybdenum, and 7% nickel, it demonstrates superior resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, making it suitable for marine, chemical, and oil & gas applications. However, it’s best used below 600°F (316°C) to avoid toughness reduction due to prolonged elevated temperatures.

Processing and Fabrication Properties of 2507 Stainless Steel

  • Forming: Suitable for standard stainless steel forming techniques. Higher force is required due to high strength; cold forming needs additional measures to prevent work hardening.
  • Welding: Standard welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, PAW, FCW, and SAW) are suitable. Avoid high interpass temperatures to prevent structural distortion.
  • Heat Treatment:
    • Annealing: Performed at 1040-1120°C, followed by rapid air or water quenching.
    • Hardening: Achievable through work hardening rather than thermal treatment.
  • Machinability: Similar to austenitic stainless grades but requires more cutting force. Use of rigid tooling and reduced feed rates is recommended.

Applications of 2507 Stainless Steel

2507 Stainless Steel is well-suited for industries requiring high durability and resistance to harsh environments:

  • Oil & Gas: Offshore platforms, pipelines, and storage tanks.
  • Chemical Processing: Heat exchangers, vessels, and chemical piping.
  • Marine: Desalination equipment, seawater applications, shipbuilding.
  • Pulp & Paper: Digesters and bleaching equipment exposed to acidic conditions.
  • Power Generation: Flue gas desulfurization units, scrubber systems, absorber towers.

2507 Stainless Steel vs. Other Materials

Compared to 316L, 2507 offers greater resistance to chloride pitting and stress corrosion cracking, along with superior strength. In comparison to other super duplex steels, such as 2205, it demonstrates enhanced corrosion resistance due to higher chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content. However, for high-temperature applications, 316L may be more suitable due to the heat sensitivity of 2507 at temperatures above 600°F.
