254 SMO Stainless Steel

254 SMO Stainless Steel (UNS S31254) is a high-end, super-austenitic stainless steel characterized by excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride-rich environments. With high levels of molybdenum and nitrogen, it exhibits outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress-corrosion cracking, making it ideal for applications exposed to seawater, brackish water, and harsh chemical environments. Notably, 254 SMO outperforms conventional austenitic grades and can be a cost-effective substitute for high-nickel and titanium alloys.

Processing Properties

  • Heat Treatment:
    • Annealing: Heat to 2100 – 2200°F (1149 – 1204°C), then water quench to retain corrosion resistance.
  • Machining: Difficult to machine due to high work hardening rate; recommended using slow speeds, sharp tools, and ample lubrication.
  • Welding: Requires filler material for optimal strength properties, with ERNiCrMo-3 or similar as preferred filler material. Preheating is not necessary.
  • Cold Working: Achievable with traditional methods, though it requires significant force due to high strength. Cold working increases hardness and toughness.

Applications of 254 SMO Stainless Steel

254 SMO is well-suited for challenging industrial environments where resistance to seawater, brackish water, and high-chloride solutions is essential:

  • Marine Applications: Saltwater handling systems, offshore rigs, desalination plants.
  • Chemical Processing: Equipment for handling sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids.
  • Pulp & Paper Industry: Bleach systems and acid recovery systems.
  • Oil & Gas Industry: Flue gas desulfurization, heat exchangers, tall oil distillation columns.
