347 Stainless Steel

347 Stainless Steel is a niobium-stabilized, austenitic stainless steel known for its excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion, even in high-temperature applications (up to 1500°F). With its high creep and stress rupture properties, it surpasses traditional 304 and 304L grades for operations involving heat. The presence of niobium prevents chromium carbide precipitation, making it highly reliable in the temperature range of 800-1500°F.

Processing and Fabrication Properties of 347 Stainless Steel

  • Forming: Easily formed by hot and cold processes; best for use when significant bending or shaping is needed.
  • Welding: Suitable for all standard welding methods, such as TIG, MIG, and arc welding; stabilized with niobium, hence prevents carbide precipitation.
  • Machining: Tough to machine; recommended use of sharp tools with slow speeds.
  • Heat Treatment: Solution annealed at 950-1120°C followed by rapid cooling to retain stability.
  • Heat Resistance: Excellent resistance in cyclic conditions up to 1500°F (815°C) without oxidation.

Applications of 347 Stainless Steel

347 stainless steel is frequently employed in environments requiring robust performance in extreme conditions:

  • Chemical Processing Equipment: Fluid catalytic cracking units, heat exchangers
  • High-Temperature Applications: Exhaust manifolds, furnace parts, heat-resistant fixtures
  • Oil Refineries: Recuperator tube sheets, hangar rods
  • Nuclear Reactors and Power Generation: Withstands high temperatures and corrosive atmospheres

347 Stainless Steel vs. 304 Stainless Steel

While 304 stainless steel offers good corrosion resistance, 347 stainless steel outperforms it in environments exposed to prolonged heat, as it resists intergranular corrosion due to its niobium stabilization.
