Processing and Fabrication Properties of 410 Stainless Steel

  • Forming: 410 can be formed using standard techniques, though it is best suited for processing in annealed conditions.
  • Welding: Easily welded with preheating at 150-260°C and post-weld annealing recommended to enhance toughness.
  • Heat Treatment: Hardening is achieved by heating to 925-1010°C, followed by air or oil quenching, then tempering to reach desired hardness.
  • Heat Resistance: Good oxidation resistance up to 650°C, though mechanical properties may decline between 400-580°C.

Applications of 410 Stainless Steel

This stainless steel is widely used in applications where its good mechanical strength and moderate corrosion resistance make it ideal:

  • Automotive: Exhaust systems, manifolds, and heat-resistant components.
  • Industrial: Pumps, valves, shafts, and fasteners.
  • Cutlery and Kitchenware: Knives, forks, and general kitchen utensils.
  • Medical and Dental Instruments: For items that require high strength and sterilizability.

410 Stainless Steel vs. 304 Stainless Steel

While 304 Stainless Steel has superior corrosion resistance, 410 Stainless Steel offers better wear resistance and is hardenable. This makes 410 better suited for applications like cutlery and automotive parts where hardness and toughness are critical.
