434 Stainless Steel

434 Stainless Steel (UNS S43400) is a ferritic, non-hardenable stainless steel that includes molybdenum for enhanced corrosion resistance compared to 430 stainless steel. Known for its excellent resistance to chloride attack, it is ideal for exterior applications where corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties are required.

Processing and Fabrication Properties of 434 Stainless Steel

  • Forming: Readily cold formable; has similar characteristics to low-carbon steel but requires stronger tooling due to its higher strength.
  • Welding: 434 stainless steel can be welded with most conventional methods, though preheating to 150-200°C is recommended. Post-weld cleaning improves corrosion resistance.
  • Heat Treatment:
    • Annealing: Carried out at 788 – 872°C followed by cooling, which optimizes ductility.
  • Heat Resistance: Resists oxidation up to 815°C in intermittent service and continuous use.
  • Machinability: Comparable to other ferritic grades; using sharp tools and appropriate coolants reduces work hardening.

Applications of 434 Stainless Steel

434 Stainless Steel is often selected for applications where resistance to chlorides and slightly acidic conditions is necessary, including:

  • Automotive: Trim and moldings for exterior components.
  • Architectural: Roofing, siding, and decorative trim.
  • Kitchen Equipment: Dishwashers, range hoods, and cookers.
  • Industrial Equipment: Chemical plants, refinery equipment, and nitric acid plant components.

434 Stainless Steel vs. 430 Stainless Steel

While 430 Stainless Steel provides adequate corrosion resistance for general uses, 434 Stainless Steel offers enhanced resistance to chloride and sulfur exposure due to its molybdenum content. This makes 434 a preferred choice for environments prone to salt exposure and for applications that require slightly better durability than 430.
