Common Aluminium Alloys for Construction

  1. 6061 Aluminium Alloy One of the most versatile and widely used aluminium alloys, 6061 offers excellent strength and corrosion resistance. This alloy is heat-treatable and suitable for structural framing, roof trusses, and load-bearing applications. Its weldability and machinability make it a popular choice for large construction projects. 

    Applications: Structural beams, scaffolding, support columns, roof structures, and industrial frameworks. 

  2. 7075 Aluminium Alloy Known for its superior strength, 7075 is primarily used in high-stress structural components. This alloy contains zinc, copper, and magnesium, which provide excellent mechanical properties, making it ideal for demanding applications like bridge components and high-strength frames. 

    Applications: Bridges, high-rise building frameworks, and other critical load-bearing structures. 

  3. 3003 Aluminium Alloy 3003 is a medium-strength alloy that is highly corrosion resistant, making it ideal for outdoor architectural applications. It is not heat-treatable but offers good workability and can be easily formed and welded. 

    Applications: Roofing panels, exterior facades, siding, and architectural trims. 

  4. 5052 Aluminium Alloy Known for its excellent corrosion resistance, 5052 is often used in environments exposed to moisture, making it ideal for roofing, gutters, and exterior applications. Although not typically used for structural load-bearing, it provides durability in less intensive applications. 

    Applications: Exterior cladding, roofing, gutters, facades, and non-structural building elements. 

  5. 6063 Aluminium Alloy Often referred to as the “architectural alloy,” 6063 is used for both structural and decorative purposes due to its excellent surface finish and moderate strength. It is commonly extruded into shapes for window frames, doors, and other decorative components in buildings. 

    Applications: Window frames, doors, handrails, and decorative trims. 

  6. Aluminium-Lithium Alloy While more commonly used in aerospace, Aluminium-Lithium alloys are also applied in specialized construction projects where low weight and high strength are crucial. These alloys offer enhanced corrosion resistance and fatigue strength, making them useful in extreme environments. 

    Applications: Specialised structures like stadium roofs, bridges, and lightweight building frameworks.

  • ASTM B221: Standard specification for aluminium and aluminium-alloy extruded bars, rods, wire, profiles, and tubes.
  • EN 1999-1-1: European standard for the design of aluminium structures, ensuring safety and performance in construction.
