Differences Between BS1470 and EN Standards

For those familiar with the older BS1470 standard, here are some key differences in the EN standards:

• Chemical Composition: Remains unchanged.
• Alloy Numbering System: Remains unchanged.
• Temper Designations: Expanded to include up to four digits after the “T” for heat-treatable alloys to accommodate non-standard applications (e.g., T6151). For non-heat-treatable alloys, more comprehensive definitions explain how tempers are achieved.
• Mechanical Properties: Slightly different, with 0.2% proof stress now required on test certificates.
• Thickness Tolerances: Tighter tolerances, especially for alloys 1050A and 3103. Alloys like 5251, 5083, and 6082 have wider tolerances, though still tighter than BS1470.
• Length and Width Tolerances: Now tighter and all are on the plus side (i.e., minus zero).
• Flatness Tolerances: Significantly improved.
