HE30 Aluminium

HE30 Aluminium is a heat-treatable aluminium–magnesium–silicon–manganese alloy valued for its high strength, good corrosion resistance, weldability and machinability. It is widely used for structural components, precision-machined parts, transportation equipment, marine structures, bridges, cranes, trusses and general engineering applications.

HE30 is an older British designation commonly cross-referenced with Aluminium 6082, EN AW-6082, AA 6082 and UNS A96082. In older British specifications, HE30 was principally associated with extruded bars, tubes and sections, while HP30 and HS30 were used for plate and sheet forms. Buyers should therefore confirm the required product form, standard and temper rather than ordering only by the HE30 name.

Solitaire Steel & Engineering LLP, based in Khetwadi, Mumbai, India, supplies and exports HE30 aluminium sheets, plates, pipes, tubes, coils, round bars, flat bars and other required forms. Material can be supplied in applicable tempers, standards, dimensions and finishes according to the buyer’s drawing, application and quantity.

Anodising Ability Good
Decorative Anodising Surface appearance should be trialled and approved
Protective Anodising Suitable
Available Finish Mill finish, polished, brushed, anodised or customer-specific finish

The manganese content can influence the appearance and uniformity of decorative anodising.

Thermal Properties

Property Typical Value
Thermal Conductivity Approximately 170–180 W/m·K
Specific Heat Capacity Approximately 0.90 J/g·K
Melting Range Approximately 555°C–650°C

Processing Properties

Property Performance
Machinability Good, particularly in T6 and T651 tempers
Cold Formability Fair in heat-treated conditions
Hot Formability Good under controlled conditions
Weldability Good
Brazability Good with a suitable process
Corrosion Resistance Very good
Heat-Treatable Yes
Common Tempers T4, T6, T651 and T6511
Anodising Ability Good
Extrudability Good, but complex thin-wall profiles may require evaluation

Welding can reduce strength in the heat-affected zone. Where the welded assembly carries structural loads, the designer should consider the reduced post-weld mechanical properties.

When Should a Buyer Select HE30 Aluminium?

HE30 aluminium is suitable when the requirement combines:

  • Higher strength than general-purpose 6063 aluminium
  • Good machinability
  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Good weldability
  • Reduced component weight
  • Suitability for structural sections and machined plates
  • Availability in T6, T651 or T6511 condition

HE30 is often considered for structural and machining applications where 6063 may not provide sufficient strength. However, buyers should not assume that HE30 and 6061 are interchangeable without checking strength, dimensions, corrosion exposure, fabrication method and governing specification.

Important Buyer Check: HE30 or 6082?

When an older drawing mentions HE30, the buyer should confirm:

  • Whether the requirement is for a bar, tube, section, sheet or plate
  • Which British Standard edition is referenced
  • Whether EN AW-6082 is accepted as the replacement designation
  • Whether the required temper is T4, T6, T651 or T6511
  • Required minimum tensile and proof strength
  • Whether welding is involved
  • Whether anodising or another surface treatment is required
  • Whether dimensional tolerances follow an older BS or current EN specification

This verification reduces the risk of supplying the correct alloy family in the wrong temper or product specification.
